Documentario su Michael Rakowitz

Il clip prodotto da Damiano Tullio documenta la realizzazione dell'opera “Geniza per Ostia”, di Michael Rakowitz presentata durante la settima edizione della Biennale di Arte Contemporanea ARTEIMEMORIA. Il lavoro creato per la sinagoga di Ostia trae spunto dalla condizione di profondo dolore vissuta da Rakowitz a causa della grave malattia che ha colpito sua madre, cui è legatissimo personalmente e intellettualmente: a lei deve la passione precoce per la poesia e la scelta di diventare artista. Emigrata con la famiglia da Baghdad nel ’56 alla volta degli Stati Uniti, ha continuato a mantenere viva e a trasmettere al figlio la cultura e la tradizione irachena-ebraica-araba. Quando nel ’91 è scoppiata la Guerra del Golfo, tra il paese dove i suoi nonni si erano rifugiati e quello dal quale erano fuggiti, Rakowitz ha sentito che l’intera cultura della sua famiglia era minacciata e che il suo dovere di artista era di salvaguardarla. “Come un museo minacciato dalla guerra, come le biblioteche minacciate dagli iconoclasti e dal fuoco, ho visto nella malattia di mia madre una minaccia per il passato e il futuro di una intera cultura”. Per questo, ha collezionato per anni frammenti di Torah irachene, libri di preghiere, bicchieri per la preghiera del sabato danneggiati e altri oggetti religiosi, pensando di costruire un archivio della storia ebraica irachena. “In realtà, mi sembra di aver costruito solo una gheniza”, una sorta di deposito, generalmente nella sinagoga, destinato a questi oggetti religiosi prima di ricevere degna sepoltura. Se seppellire è nascondere, mettere a giacere e a riposare nella terra, “per Arte in Memoria propongo di seppellire il mio archivio nel terreno della sinagoga di Ostia.
